NIC sets Sundays as Family Free Days

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 12:48 PM MDT

The Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center, which began charging entrance fees on July 1, has designated Sundays as Family Free Days to allow more access to the museum and its activities.

"We realize that not everyone in Casper can afford a museum membership or to pay daily admission for an entire family to see our unique exhibitions,” according to Executive Director Holly Turner.

“So this offers everyone a chance to come enjoy all we have to see and do."

The NIC began charging the entrance fees to offset the costs associated with efforts to become accredited by the American Association of Museums and to help cover its increasing costs of operation.

While museum members receive free admission, non-member admission prices are $5 for adults 18 years and older, $3 for children ages 5-17, children under 5 years admitted free, and $3 for students presenting a valid student ID.

Dunham brings “Spark of Insanity” to Casper

Comedian Jeff Dunham brings his “Spark of Insanity” Tour to the Casper Events Center on Sunday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m.

Tickets are on sale and are $41.50 plus applicable fees for reserved seating and are available at the Casper Events Center Box Office, charge by phone at 577-3030 or 1-800-442-2256 or at www.caspereventscenter.com.

Dunham’s talent has transcended the art of ventriloquism and transformed it into a cutting-edge comedy experience. Fans of all ages have fallen in love with his fast-talking and socially reckless “Suitcase Posse.”

Probably most recognizable to TV viewers is Walter, the elderly, outspoken, and politically incorrect curmudgeon. There’s Peanut, a frenzied, loudmouthed, purple imp, who Walter describes as “a Muppet on crack.”

José Jalapeño teamed up with Dunham after a pogo accident in Mexico, which permanently placed him "on a steek." Bubba J is a diehard, beer-drinking, NASCAR fan.

Dunham’s latest character to join the act is Achmed, the Dead Terrorist, who has allowed Dunham to throw a spitball directly in the eye of political correctness.

Laramie artists work on large sculpture

The artists at the Creative Arts Center of Ark Regional Services in Laramie are working on a large-scale sculpture made of sheet metal for "Sculpture: A Wyoming Invitational."

Inspired by Alexander Calder's large, colorful and whimsical stabiles, and guided by visual arts coordinator Debbie Gardner and local artist Alison Arnold, Ark artists are creating their own interior designs for the yet-to-be-named sculpture.

People will be able to walk around and inside the public sculpture, which will be placed in front of the Creative Arts Center at 1174 N. Fourth St.

"This project is an exciting artistic experience for all the participants," said Mary Arnold, manager of the Creative Arts Center.

"They are learning about Alexander Calder, a renowned American artist, as well as three-dimensional design, group cohesiveness and the process and production of public sculpture."

The Creative Arts Center provides opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities to explore and express their creativity and learn and grow in an integrated and enriched community environment.

"Sculpture: A Wyoming Invitational" is being organized by the UW Art Museum, various agencies in the City of Laramie and the Albany County Public Library.

Sculptures will be placed or created on location through July. The exhibition will be on view from Aug. 1 of this year through July 31, 2009.
