What makes good community news?

Over the next couple weeks, the Casper Journal’s news staff will begin looking at our product and planning for the coming year.
We’ll be looking at where we’ve been the last couple years, and where we’re going in 2008 and beyond. What should we be doing more of, and what should we cut out? That’s what we’ll be trying to decide, and we’d like your input.
Here’s an idea of some things to consider. Should they stay or should they go?
We’ve always said that community news is about people, not just about events. We’ve spotlighted people in a variety of ways, from past features like Faces in the Crowd to current things like Artist’s Portrait.
The last couple years, the Casper Journal has dived into what traditionally is considered “hard news” a bit more, with our coverage of things like the Natrona County School District and public meetings. That has ruffled some feathers, but we’ve also received thanks and more story tips from readers.
We have an election year upcoming. Is the Casper Journal the place for political news? Should we be providing more stories on the Legislature and the upcoming elections, or could we be looking at things from a different, more fresh perspective?
When it comes to sports, we typically don’t provide a play by play of games. We’re more interested in finding the personal stories n athletes who are training for a specific event, or the weekend warrior who accomplished something of which he’s proud.
The Casper Journal is a community newspaper, and we want to make it as inclusive for the people of Natrona County as possible; the more names, the better. You’ll find honor rolls, military announcements, obituaries and more each week. That probably won’t change, but if there’s something your family member or neighbor is doing, we’d like to hear about it, and share it with our community.
What do you like? What do you dislike? What would you like to see more of? What are we missing? What are we doing right?
We welcome your comments. Please send them to editor@casperjournal.com, or mail them to 210 S. Wolcott, Casper, 82601. You also can always call 233-8445.
We look forward to hearing from you.
