Advocating for Casper’s homeless students

by Dale Bohren
Friday, November 9, 2007 5:39 AM MST

Greta Hinderliter is someone we should know about. She is the liaison between public schools and homeless families in Casper, and this year she has 94 children on her list.

A story in today’s Casper Journal examines and explains the work she is very passionate about.

There are some heart-wrenching facts revealed in this story -- 94 homeless children in local schools, more than that on the street, children as young as 13 that are on their own in Casper, a family where the 5-year-old is the best reader.

But most striking about this story is a simple comment Hinderliter made. She said, "Whatever a child needs to stay in school, I'll do it."

That is the kind of commitment that climbs mountains and wins wars! That is the kind of commitment homeless students of any age need on their side to achieve one of the few things that might give them some advantage, some purchase on the edge: that would be an education.

Thanks and appreciation to Greta Hinderliter for her commitment and determination on behalf of homeless students. She is changing their world. In fact, she will change our world too.
