Academic Challenge Program meetings set

In its 13th year, Dean Morgan’s Academic Challenge Program offers educational opportunities for academically talented/advanced students in grades 7-8 through a unique approach that addresses their needs.

For new students applying for enrollment, parents and students are required to attend an informational meeting about the application process and the orientation criteria.

Upcoming meetings are scheduled at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, or Tuesday, Feb. 5, both in the school library.

Advanced tracks are offered for accelerated learners in math, language arts, science and social studies/history. The students who enroll in the Academic Challenge Program are prepared for a successful transition into programs and classes at NCHS and Kelly Walsh.

Application materials and specific deadlines will be distributed at these meetings. Call 577-4440 if you have questions.

Regional Science Bowl slated Feb. 2

The Wyoming Regional Science Bowl is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Frontier Middle School.

This academic competition is sponsored nationally by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and hosted locally by DOE's Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center (RMOTC) in Casper.

Science Bowl provides Wyoming high school teams (four students plus one alternate per team) the opportunity to show off their knowledge of all things science. The quiz format includes questions in biology, chemistry, math, physics, earth science, general science and astronomy.

Prizes are awarded to the top three teams and to the team that best demonstrates the spirit of Science Bowl in their sportsmanship, team work and general conduct.

In addition to several prizes, first-place winters get an all-expense paid trip for the team and their coach to the National Science Bowl for High School in Washington, D.C., from May 1-6.

In its 10th year, RMOTC will host 15 teams from seven communities around the state this year.

The public is invited to attend the competition rounds and to view the enhancement activities provided by Casper College, which will include robot demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Additional information on the Science Bowl is available at http://www.scied.science.doe.gov/nsb/Default.htm.

For more information, call Jim Nations at RMOTC, 233-4831.
