Leo S. ‘Chubby’ Chernick

A Memorial Mass for Leo S. “Chubby” Chernick, 76, was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. July 18, 2008, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church by Father Edwin Laude.

Cremation had taken place and the cremated remains will be interred at Highland Cemetery at a later time.

Mr. Chernick died July 5, 2008, at his Casper home of a blood clot to his heart. He was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Casper to Leo J. and Blanche (Smith) Chernick.

He grew up in Casper and attended St. Anthony’s School up to the eighth grade. While in high school, he belonged to the ROTC and Civil Air Patrol, graduating from NCHS in 1951.

Mr. Chernick enlisted in the Air Force from 1953-54 during the Korean conflict.

On Jan. 3, 1953, he married Shannon Barker at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Casper.

Mr. Chernick worked for the Texaco Refinery for 31 years.

A member of the Casper Area Transportation Coalition and the Wyoming National Guard, he loved his grandchildren and going to garage sales.

Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Lisa (Kurt) Miller and a son, Mike Chernick, three grandchildren, Stephanie, Christian and Devon, and three great-grandchildren, all of Casper.

He also is survived by two brothers, Don Chernick of Lacrosse, Wis., and Ed Chernick of Casper; three sisters, Jo Legerski of Sheridan, and Helen Keifer and Derel Thompson, both of Casper; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bustard’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
