I was privileged to talk with Nonie Darwish, author of “NOW THEY CALL ME INFIDEL: Why I Renounced Jihad for America, Israel, and the War on Terror,” while she was here for the Nov. 15 lecture at the Marine Corps League’s dinner.
I found her, as expected, very intelligent and well educated, an opinion shared by others at the dinner.
When I read her book, four parts seemed appropriate for this article: (1) her credentials about radical Islam and jihad (holy war); (2) the shocking way Muslim women are treated and discriminated against; (3) her discovery of love in the Christian religion that replaced 30 years of Islam’s hatred and violence teachings; and (4) radical Islam’s strategy for taking over America and other western nations unless the West wakes up and takes a strong stand.
The first part, credentials, was covered in this column’s previous article, “Darwish to speak at Marine Corps League dinner,” (Nov. 6, 2007) so won’t be repeated.
The second part gives us a woman’s viewpoint of how Muslim men mistreat their wives, sanctioned by the Muslim’s holy book, the Koran. The demeaning way Muslim women are treated defies reason and logic in this modern age.
Darwish explains, “The Muslim man rules her and is ruled by the most despotic, tyrannical and humiliating forms of governments on Earth. It is a supreme irony that the female in his family is the one object over which he may have power.
“Many of the Arab/Muslim social problems stem directly from the institution of polygamy.” It is codified into Islamic law, “limiting men to four wives plus any number of slave women …
“At all levels of Islamic society, the sharia laws turn the relationship between husband and wife from that of partners to one of slave and master… Because of a verse in the Koran (Surah 4:34), many Muslim men feel that it is within their legal and religious right to beat their wives,” she notes.
In part 3, she says that though she always considered herself a Muslim, “as Middle Eastern women we never attended mosques or had any ties to religious institutions… Mosques were part of a man’s world, one that women simply did not experience.”
However, after moving to America, she and her husband took a visiting Egyptian friend to a Los Angeles mosque that admitted women.
They were completely turned off by the radical sermon that had “an undertone of anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism” instead of an American message of “tolerance, friendship and assimilation” they naturally expected to hear.
This prompted her to inquire and investigate. What she learned was amazing.
Many mosques in America are as radical as those in the most extreme Muslim countries, and many of them were built by the Saudi government, which provides and pays their preachers “to keep American Muslins in line, Islamize America and promote the radical Wahabi sect of Islam.”
The radicalization within the American Muslim community disturbed her as did the “double face of Muslim radicals.”
They regularly use radical Islam’s propaganda line that Islam is a religion of “love, compassion and respect for other religions” when talking in English, but advocate killing, jihad and war against infidels when speaking to Arabs in Arabic.
This led her eventually to switch to Christianity. In giving up Islam, of course, she risks death if she ever visits a Muslim land.
She makes two key points in part four: (1) “Islam is not just a religion. It is a political system; it is a legal system, both civil and criminal… (2) The goal of jihad is to conquer the world, literally, for Islam, and (establish) a Caliphate, a supreme totalitarian Islamic government, one constitution (the Koran), and one law (sharia Islamic law).”
She asserts adamantly, “We are already in World War III… (against an) enemy that is … a fanatical religious movement equipped with a very powerful weapon of mass destruction called suicide/homicide bombers.”
How do we defend ourselves? She suggests many ways, but here are a couple. Get tougher, stop political correctness and deal appropriately with elements in our country that advocate radical Islam’s announced goal of taking over our country.
Also, tighten immigration laws by using the former question about membership in the Communist Party to inquire of new immigrants about their association with radical Islamists or terror groups.
