Mustang matmen roll past KW

Natrona County High School built a quick 30-0 lead and rolled to a 58-24 wrestling victory over Kelly Walsh on Jan. 28 at KWHS n claiming the Miller Cup for the 12th straight year.

Powerful Star Valley, ranked third in the state in Class 4A, dominated the Mustangs 65-7 on Friday, then NCHS rebounded with a 38-26 win over Evanston.

In the Trojan War Dual Tournament on Saturday at KWHS, the Trojans suffered losses to Douglas 66-16, Rock Springs 52-24 and Laramie 42-37.

Cody Parke (152 pounds) and Ab Brown (171) won by fall, sandwiched around a forfeit win by Nick Jacobs, then Lucas Hurt (189) and Chase Cimburek (215) pinned their Trojan foes for a 30-0 Mustangs lead.

Lane Millay (285) got KW on the board with a win by fall. After a NC forfeit win, Josh Hillhouse (112) of KW pinned Brandon Kussy in 5:11 in one of the most competitive matches of the dual.

Later, Zane Gray (130) won by fall for NC, and Kellan Propes (135) and Thomas Myler (140) had technical falls. To close out the dual, Cormick Eaton (145) pinned his Mustang opponent.

Caleb Seghetti of NC sat out the dual due to a knee injury.

Brown, Myler, Hurt, Cimburek, Kussy, Neil Williams (135), Caleb Rhoades (145) and Jake Homer (152) all earned wins in the Mustangs’ victory over Evanston.

Evanston won the first three matches to take a 14-0 lead, but the Mustangs won six of the next seven matches n in dominating fashion. Williams got NC going with a first-period pin, then Myler won by fall in 1:06. After a Red Devils win, Brown, Hurt and Cimburek picked up wins. Kussy sealed the win with a second-period fall.

Kussy and Cimburek were the only match winners in the loss to Star Valley.
